This is very informative about network externalities. I have heard that previously in Public Switched Telephone Network, where the network externalities are direct in that the value that any user places on subscribing depends on the number of others with whom the preson can communicate.

Chuck, You're right...not about the technology...technology is a means, not an end.

As I hope to convey in future posts, healthcare entering the network economy has multidimensional aspects and implications. While this series is focusing on network economics, "network" terminology is used in math, sociology, physics, physics, business, technology, business.

Simplest explanation is that "networks" facilitate collaboration among people.

Christensen's book is excellent. His recognition of 3 elements of disruptive innovation is insightful: 1) technology enabler, 2) business model, 3) value network.

Vince,

Very interesting. What caught my attention on this topic was not the technology aspect, but the market aspect of health care delivery. Perhaps you've read "The Innovator's Prescription" by Clayton Christensen, in which he introduces FACILITATED NETWORKS as one of three key business models that is emerging/needs to emerge in health care to improve quality and value. Interesting connection to your thrust here...
